Author Spotlight: Emily Guido

Please welcome paranormal romance author, Emily Guido to my blog today, with a guest post about how she writes. There's also a small giveaway right at the bottom ;)

Welcome Emily! Take it away...

I write; however, I am going to tell you the reality how I write… tell you the gospel truth how I write. I think I have enough guts to share it with you now. Of course I’m a guest on Dianna’s blog, so I will not make it so bad but it’s got to be the weirdest thing you have heard in a while… here goes…

*swallow the lump in throat*

I get this idea in my head like I’ve actually seen a movie. Then I write like I am desperate to get it out of my head and on my laptop.

I promised you the truth!

So truth be told it is like someone has a gun and it’s pointing to my head. The person is standing there with the gun in their hand and says, “Now write exactly what went on in the movie word for word, or I will cap you!”

The guy with the gun is not only wanting me to write it word for word, he wants emotions, smells, air movements, colors, facial expressions, and even the breath movements. He says to me, “Write it very detailed Emily… your life depends on it!”

How violent is that?

When I wrote “Charmeine” my first novel I wrote 100,000 in less than a week. I stayed up for over 48 hours typing. Not eating, just drinking coffee and water.

People laugh and say I had ‘my muse’ at work! Ha! If they only knew what a terrifying experience to write with an imaginary person wanting to off you, they wouldn’t be calling it a ‘muse.’

I felt like if I missed a color or a smell when I wrote, my head would end up on the living room wall. Terrifying isn’t the word for it, it was horrific!

When I am interviewed, I usually give my standard answer that I have an idea and I write. I leave out the part about the gun to my head.

Nowadays when I write, for instance this little admission as a guest on Dianna’s blog, I write and then step away… trying to ignore the man pointing the gun at the base of my neck.

I play music while I write, it makes me relax and feel more centered. For you writers out there, how you can pull this off fulltime is beyond me?

However, I am working on “Conundrum” my third novel in “The Light-Bearer Series” and I think the new techniques I have come up with have helped a lot.

Also, I am in the middle of writing a trilogy of short stories and working on the third story now – like before… I have to take breaks and ignore the man with the gun.

Consequently, I am not as productive as I was the first time I wrote a novel, but I am infinitely more relaxed and it shows in the writing. I am not as rushed and hurried.

I would like to share a couple excerpts but give you insights into them:

The first is from “Charmeine” while I was writing this snippet I wanted to show Tabbruis and Charmeine’s very complicated relationship even though they were total opposites of each other. Blood-Hunters and Light-Bearers typically hunt and kill each other. However, when Charmeine and Tabbruis meet, there is nothing like that going on in their mind at all… quite the opposite.

Excerpt from “Charmeine” the First Novel in “The Light-Bearer Series”
(Note: Charleen is Charmeine… she just hasn’t remembered it yet!)
Keeping her head toward the harbor, Charleen took a big breath and said, “A blood-hunter and a light-bearer we may be, but even if you do not want to admit it… there is a link between us.”
Tabbruis walked up beside her to look out at the harbor also. He put his hands out on the railing next to hers.
All of a sudden, Tabbruis could feel a small current run from her hand into his.  Tabbruis loved the feeling of it.
Still thinking he was going to reject her; Charleen kept her hand still and said, “Like my hand sparking next to yours, I don’t know what it is.”
Tabbruis sighed and said, “Yes; it would be easier to deny there is a link…” and he gazed at her hand while it sparked waves of light, “but I have to recognize there is a connection between us and admit it.”  Tabbruis could feel her energy surging into him. He let his hand linger next to hers while they looked out over the harbor.
Tabbruis wanted to tell her all the centuries of emptiness he experienced were washed away when he laid his eyes on her.
Tabbruis picked up her right hand, and they turned to each other watching the streams of light dancing around their two hands.
Charleen began to smile and so did Tabbruis.  Softly she said, “This has never happened to me before.”
Tabbruis was surprised and hopeful when he asked, “Not with anyone else?”
Charleen answered, “I swear, I’ve never seen the light until tonight. Do you think it’s because of you; maybe?”
Tabbruis was smiling from ear to ear! He was overjoyed! The light never occurred with anyone else but him.
Because of this Tabbruis and Charleen connected on a whole new level of closeness.
She said, “Does it hurt?”
Tabbruis sighed with a smile and said dreamily, “No, it feels like tingling warmth.  It is an excellent sensation.”
Thoughtfully Charleen said, “So it’s not a self-defense reaction.” Then she smiled wide and with excitement said, “It must be because my light likes you!”
Tabbruis repeated in in his thoughts over and over again, ‘…because her light likes me?’  Wonderment filled Tabbruis and he smiled looking down at the twirling ribbons of light. With her right hand resting on his, Charleen put her left hand up and he put his other hand on it.  Her hand began to send tendrils of swirling light to his hand too.
With both of his hands enfolded in light, Tabbruis said with a gentle voice, “You cannot even imagine how good it feels.”
Charleen quietly said, “The light really looks like it hurts you.”
Tabbruis shook his head, smiled and said, “I only feel warmth and tenderness.”
Tabbruis and Charleen stood watching their hands as they caressed and held each other.  Their hands were doing what they wanted to do with their bodies, to touch, be together and hold each other.

The next excerpt is from “Ransom” the Second Novel in “The Light-Bearer Series” and it is so emotional because just like in our relationships… life happens and Tabbruis and Charmeine love each other but they have trouble communicating, expressing how they feel and get their feelings hurt. They are not “perfect” like most romance authors would like you to realize they step on each other’s feelings a lot. I wanted to show them in a light that is truthful.

Excerpt from “Ransom” the Second Novel in “The Light-Bearer Series”
Tabbruis took Charmeine to the bedroom, threw her on the bed, and shouted, “Do you want me or him?”
Charmeine said with a furrowed brow, “What?”
Tabbruis walked to the dresser, leaned on it and yelled, “I will not play second fiddle to anyone! I will not have you unless I have all of you!”
Charmeine was infuriated, and she lunged at Tabbruis giving him a good push. They both fell back on the dresser knocking everything down crashing to the floor. She put her hands on his big shoulders and said with clinched teeth, “Tabbruis, you are not playing ‘second fiddle’ to anyone! I hate the son of a bitch! But I can’t help he was made to be put in the middle of us!” She ran her hands over his naked chest feeling his rippling muscles and abs.
Tabbruis moaned and closed his eyes enjoying her touch.
Charmeine said in a calm voice, “But he is in the middle, just like Bathsheba was also.” She ran her hands up his strong muscular back into his hair. Tabbruis growled and looked at her with eyes totally black now with desire. Charmeine’s eyes were sparkling and looked at him with want and desire.
Tabbruis began to kiss Charmeine deeply. Then he released her and said in a pant, “I waited for you Charmeine. I never was unfaithful to you.”
Charmeine’s eyes flew open; she broke away and walked across the room. She said, “Not physically, that is… right Tabbruis?”
Tabbruis put his hand up on his eyes and said, “I told you, I was in lust with her.”
Incensed, Charmeine threw a vase at him and he ducked with superhuman speed while she yelled, “You have no right to ask me about Cromwell when you, yourself had the same feelings!”
Tabbruis grabbed her and shouted, “Charmeine!” and she fought him.
Charmeine said with a bellow, “If I wanted that piece of trash, Cromwell, I would have left you to die.” She made him crash into a table and everything went off unto the floor. Tabbruis kept his grip on her. They both crashed into the wall making some pictures fall on the floor.
Tabbruis yelled, “Charmeine stop!” and pushed her up against the wall.
Then something in Charmeine snapped. The guilt she had been feeling over her encounter with Lord Cromwell enfolded her. Tears were pouring out of her eyes. She cried, “I’m sorry Tabbruis, I don’t know why I reacted to Cromwell like that?” Charmeine leaned into him burying her face in his neck.
Tabbruis warmed all over when he felt her hot breath and tears. He hugged her with his big muscular arms and said, “I am sorry too Charmeine; sorry because I could not help myself and acted like a lust-ridden fool.”
Tabbruis looked at her, put his hands on Charmeine’s cheeks and said with tenderness, “We both do not understand why we reacted the way we did, but Charmeine, the fact of the matter is that we did not succumb. We remained strong and true to ourselves and each other. My love, we do not know why these obstacles were put in front of us. Maybe God was testing our love in the fire to make sure we can overcome anything? But yet, my love, I… I should have told you about her. I should have told…”
Charmeine stopped him in midsentence with her kiss.
He growled and said, “I need you. You are mine.”
Charmeine wrapped her legs around him.
Tabbruis stopped, looked into her eyes and gently said, “I want you Charmeine. I want you to want me, only me.”
Charmeine smiled and said soft voice, “I don’t want anyone else, Tabbruis. I want only you.”
