1000 Words A Day

I recently set myself a goal of writing at least 1000 words a day. It's not a lot, it really isn't. I don't have to sit and do it all in one go. I can just do 200 words at a time -- 200 words only takes 10 minutes.  Five lots of 10 minutes in a day and suddenly, I've written 1000 words. Excellent!

If I'm writing a 40,000 word story, it's done in 40 days (just over a month).

I'm on day four of 1000 words a day, and so far so good. I'm a little ahead of schedule, but that's good. It allows me a little leeway in case I have a bad day, or get caught up doing other things.

I'd recommend giving 1000 words a day a try if you're a writer needing motivation -- just remember, it's not a lot -- just 200 words at a time, if you like.

  1. No matter how well he was doing, Ernest Hemmingway always limited himself to 500 words a day. This sort of thing worked out alright for him!

  2. Now that's a man with good boundaries. I admit that I write compulsively. If I do as well as Ernest Hemmingway did I'll be a very happy bunny indeed!

  3. Finding the time for 1000 words a day this week is proving near impossible. I'll have to attempt 7000 this weekend :s

  4. Eeeek! Then maybe aim for just 200 words a day? I know that on the days I write nothing at all, I feel like I'm going insane with unfulfillment. Good luck!
