On Writing, And Penning My First Paranormal Romance
Dark Fantasy and Paranormal Romance is the way my writing's going (as well as the gothic poetry, when I get half a chance), so I thought I'd let you all know a little about my first novel in this genre. To be honest, it'll probably be a novella, but we'll see. The difference is the word count. I'm currently 15,000 words in and I estimate a final word count of between 50 and 60k.
What can you expect from my fiction? Amongst other things, be prepared for witches and wizards, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, lots of magic, possible aliens and alternate dimensions (although this crosses over into sci-fi), fairies, elves and other nature spirits, and anything else I can conjure up with my mind. Expect elements of horror. I was an avid horror reader throughout my teenage years, with a particular love for splatterpunk (although I won't subject any of my readers to the full extent of that cult genre). Expect steamy, passionate scenes between my leading men and women, and some twisted villains.
I've always read paranormal books, even non-fiction books on the potential existence of things that go bump in the night. When I was 14, I penned my first YA paranormal thriller, Gift, which got published in a school anthology. If I'm feeling brave enough, I'll release it as a free eBook (with a foreword that it's the work of a 14 year old). Also around that time, I wrote Just Another Vicious Circle, a YA contemporary romance set in a war torn future. This story is complete with an AWFUL poem (lol!), but I may release it for free too. At the age of 17 (my splatterpunk phase), I wrote It's For You-Hou!, the short story of a homicidal telephone -- no I'm not joking, after all Stephen King can write about homicidal cars ... This bizarre story was published by a small press (no longer running) The Dream Zone. At the age of 10, I wrote my first story ever (if you don't count Little Miss Rainbow at the age of 8, which was a series of stapled pages with colour pictures and everything!). I'll have to rummage around my mum's house to find it, but I think it's called Lucinda. It's another war story, this time set in World War II, and tells the tale of a 10 year old girl (or maybe she was 12) who runs away from her foster home and befriends a blacksmith and another girl who gets her into some trouble ... can't actually remember too much about it...
I've gone off on a tangent, but seriously, if anyone wants to read these, I'll stick them into digital format as free eBooks (I wouldn't do this if the stories totally sucked, but they're okay, even for a kid's writing, and maybe it'll inspire other kids to write.).
So what happened after the age of 17? Life. I have two unfinished stories lurking at the bottom of my wardrobe which I will complete over the next few years ... one is a dark fantasy with strong Pagan elements, the other is a Paranormal Romance involving witches and curses (ooo, fun!).
Right now, I'm writing Awakening (Book One of the Project Veil series) -- this is a working title and could change. There are different breeds of vampires, there are angels, both fallen and unfallen, there are villains, both intentional and accidental, and there's the reluctant heroine who finds herself caught up between three men, a past that won't die, a hoard of evil vampires that want to kill her, and an ancient prophecy that was penned by the hands of angels. (Hopefully this catches your interest so far?) Being only 15k words in, I don't want to say too much more about it, but I'm having great fun writing it. There's an estimated release time of Spring 2012. Again, this is a work in progress, so the plot may change a little, but not too much. All updates will be blogged here.
Lastly, I do intend to bring out some short stories in the paranormal sphere too, including some free ones that I'll stick on this blog. Please subscribe for all updates.
