Authors and Readers: Here's What To Do With Your Books!

Misty, who runs Bookaholics Book Club (who, by the way, have over 3700 fans on Facebook) is holding a Book Auction for World Down Syndrome Day, a subject very close to her own heart, as her daughter, Kirsten, was born with Down Syndrome. As well as being a huge lover of books, she does a huge amount to help awareness of this disability, and to bring others who are carers for those with Downs Syndrome, together to support each other. Here's her Facebook Page dedicated to this cause: Downs Syndrome Support.

Authors and readers, Bookaholics Book Club does loads for us, so this is a great way to give something back: give your surplus books (most people I know have surplus books), give your own books if you're an author -- sign them -- give signed bookmarks, SWAG, etc. Give memorabilia like graphic art and comics; anything to do with movies and TV shows that have derived from books is probably good too. If you were waiting for the right time to clean out your bookshelf, this is it.

Misty has all the details on her site about how to contact her with your donations and any queries. And of course, you can simply go ahead and donate some money if that's easier. She's aiming to raise £1000 by 21st March, 2012, and all details are here http://bookaholicsbkcl.blogspot.com/2011/09/world-down-syndrome-day-charity-auction.html

In the brief instances in the past, when I have been in the presence of children with Down Syndrome, I have been awestruck with the sheer, unconditional, joy and love of life that they exude -- it's a genuine affection for everything around them that literally makes your heart feel light (well, most of the time -- they're also just like all other kids, with needs, wants and tears!). With that in mind, I'm leaving you with the image below from annikaleigh on Flickr, which, I feel, says it all:
