Stuff That Makes Me Want To Write
We all have things that make us tick -- things that make us want to get out of bed in the morning. Some of those things are necessity (e.g. I must get up so my toddler gets food), and some of them are your own internal sunshine. Things that make you feel like it's a bright day, even though it's dark and grey outside. As far as I'm concerened, anything that makes you feel like that, is part of your "passion" -- maybe even part of what you're supposed to do in life, in some way, shape, or form.
The things that make me tick, are the things that motivate me as a writer -- things that get me writing that next chapter:
1. (And I think all authors will agree with this one....) Receiving comments from readers. Wow, it's such a nice feeling, even if the comment is average or even negative, to know that what you wrote affected someone enough to make them want to comment is very cool, and has me reaching for the keyboard to get the next chapter out.
2. Someone liking my Facebook Fan page or friending me on Facebook -- so sad I know, but this is a bit like getting comments, even if nothing is said, and meeting new people online is always fun :)
3. Designing book covers. Seriously. There is an amateur artist in me, and at various times I've been into watercolours, pastels, sketching and photography. I almost never have the time to do these anymore -- not in a peaceful manner, anyway -- so the only way the artist in me finds peace is through web designs, whether that's book covers, creating websites, or other. I LOVE it.
4. Taking a walk in the woods / amongst nature. Also not something I get to do so much nowadays. I used to live near woods, but I don't anymore. It would literally be a long drive to reach ANCIENT woodland (my favourite kind), or a short drive to reach regular woods. My daiughter starts playschool some mornings from tomorrow, so I may get the chance to take this little pleasure up again.
So, to all writers, I say, if you're struggling with writer's block, or just can't get going, go do that other thing you love that makes you beam inside. Finding peace and balance (and through that, a stable kind of joy), goes a long way to helping me write -- it may help you too.
Lastly, whether you're a reader or an author, do come and join me on Facebook -- that's where I hang out the most! We can all help to inspire each other, and you'll be the first to see some of my excerpts and book covers, even before they go up on my websites :)
